CSRD: Sustainability reporting for the future - How boards can prepare
In 2024, the new EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) came into force, imposing higher requirements on companies to report on their sustainability impact. For boards, this means a new level of accountability, transparency and strategic planning. But what does CSRD actually mean, and how can boards prepare to comply?
Why CSRD?
The CSRD was designed to promote a sustainable and transparent economy by requiring more detailed and comparable sustainability information from companies. The previous standard, the Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD), has been criticized for being insufficient. The CSRD therefore aims to provide stakeholders - including investors, customers and society - with a more comprehensive and reliable insight into companies' environmental, social and governance performance.
What does CSRD mean for the Board?
- Broader scope
In the past, it was mainly large listed companies that were subject to sustainability reporting. With CSRD, all large companies with at least 250 employees, a net turnover of €40 million or a balance sheet of €20 million are included. For the board, this means that more companies now need to put sustainability reporting on the agenda, even if the company was not previously subject to similar requirements. - Clearer and standardized reporting requirements
The CSRD introduces common European standards, the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), which will make reporting more structured and comparable. It will be crucial for the board to ensure that these standards are followed and that the reports provide a transparent picture of the company's sustainability performance. - Externally audited information
The CSRD requires sustainability information to be audited by an external party. This not only provides quality control but also increases credibility with stakeholders. The board therefore needs to ensure that the company's sustainability strategy is sufficiently elaborated and that the information reported is accurate.
How can the board prepare?
1. integrate sustainability into strategy
CSRD makes it clear that sustainability can no longer be seen as a side activity. The board needs to ensure that sustainability is an integral part of the company's overall strategy, with clear objectives, responsibilities and follow-up.
2. educate the board and management
CSRD brings detailed requirements and specific standards that both board and management need to understand. Investing in training on CSRD and ESRS (European Sustainability Reporting Standards) is an important measure to ensure that everyone is aware of the implications of the Directive.
3. ensure systems support reporting
Sustainability reporting will require extensive data on everything from carbon emissions to working conditions. The board needs to ensure that the right systems and processes are in place to collect, analyze and report this information.
How a board portal can support CSRD sustainability efforts
With the new requirements of the CSRD, it is increasingly important for the board to have access to accurate and up-to-date data, be able to coordinate sustainability strategies and follow up on targets effectively. A digital board portal can play a crucial role in this effort in several ways:
- Centralized document management
The Board Portal makes it possible to collect and structure all documents related to sustainability work, including strategies, reports and follow-ups. By having a secure and centralized place for all information, the board can more easily get an overview and ensure that reporting meets CSRD requirements. - Effective communication and collaboration
Sustainability reporting often requires collaboration between different departments and external parties. The board portal can facilitate communication between board members, management and the sustainability team. By enabling easy sharing of insights and data, it ensures that all parties have a common understanding of sustainability progress. - Secure information sharing and auditing
With CSRD requirements for externally audited information, data security and access control are more important than ever. The board portal offers security features that protect sensitive sustainability data, and the board can easily control which individuals or external parties have access to various documents.
CSRD: An opportunity for the future of governance
CSRD challenges companies to act more responsibly and transparently, and this also provides an opportunity for boards to strengthen their role in sustainability. By embracing CSRD and working proactively on sustainability issues, companies can not only meet new legal requirements, but also create long-term value and strengthen their brand.
As a board, you now have the chance to lead the company through this change and demonstrate responsible leadership for a more sustainable future.
